Work has begun on the transformation of The Hythe Centre into a new, purpose-built home for Hythe Medical Centre, marking a major milestone in securing the long-term future of healthcare services for local people.
The redevelopment will see the existing community centre on Thorpe Road converted into a modern, expanded medical centre, replacing the temporary cabin accommodation from which the practice has been operating for several years. Once complete, the new facility will provide significantly improved accommodation for patients and staff, helping to ensure healthcare services can continue to meet the needs of the growing local community, delivering healthcare services close to home for years to come. The plans for relocating the medical centre and redeveloping the site were shared with patients and local residents during a public consultation event in 2025.
The project is being delivered by specialist health and care developer Prime plc in partnership with their funder/investors Newcore Capital, Hythe Medical Centre and NHS Surrey and Sussex Integrated Care Board with the land purchased from Runnymede Borough Council.
Importantly, patients will continue to access services as normal throughout the construction period. Hythe Medical Centre will remain fully operational from its current accommodation adjacent to the site whilst conversion work is underway.
There will be a temporary reduction in available parking spaces to facilitate the construction works but parking will be available throughout, ensuring continued access for patients throughout the construction programme.
The redevelopment is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
For many years, The Hythe Centre has been underutilised despite occupying a central location within the community. The redevelopment represents an opportunity to give the building a renewed purpose, transforming it into a facility that will serve thousands of local people every year through the provision of essential healthcare services.
The completed medical centre will provide modern consulting and clinical space designed around the needs of patients and healthcare professionals. Improved accommodation will support the delivery of high-quality primary care while creating a better environment for staff and patients alike, with increased functionality, access, comfort and privacy.
Construction work is being carried out by LST Projects, a contractor with extensive experience of delivering healthcare and community developments.
