Dyson Perrins CofE Academy is a secondary school in Malvern.
When they applied for funding, they had already started developing a wellbeing garden to support their school community, create a peaceful space for reflection and encourage learning about nature and its importance.
With the help of donations and local volunteers they had made great strides in the project but sought funding from the Prime Foundation to support them in expanding the garden with the addition of a pond, some benches and new plants.
“Excavations are complete, and the pond is now in place. We still have a little landscaping to finish off around the pond and for the students to choose the aquatic plants. The garden bench provides a quiet spot for individual reflection. Prime Foundation funding has given us the opportunity to provide a special place that naturally lends itself to calm reflection.
“Overtime, this new habitat in the garden will provide a home for a number of insects which will support students academically but will also be used therapeutically as we use the metaphor of a safe area and how nature responds, to consider our own safe spaces. The pond also allows us to explore themes such as the ripple effect of our words and actions”. Said Anita Davies, Exam officer & Data Manager.
“Students have shown fantastic teamwork, resilience and organisational skills during the excavation period. They have a real sense of accomplishment and pride in the pond. Students have already remarked on the reflections on the water that will continue to be a tool within our mental health and wellbeing work.”
