Plot 5 Adanac Health and Innovation Campus

Temporary Endoscopy Facility

Welcome to our project webpage where you can learn more about proposals to provide a temporary endoscopy service at Plot 5, Adanac Health and Innovation Campus.

This project is being led by the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and specialist health and care developer, Prime.

About Prime

Prime are specialist developers of health and care property, and act as commercial estates development partners to University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). Together we have delivered improved the main entrance and retail area and staff car park on site the hospital. We subsequently developed the park and ride facility and combined sterile services and aseptic pharmacy building at Adanac Health and Innovation Campus.

Why is a temporary endoscopy facility needed?

Endoscopy is a vital service in an acute hospital, providing fast, accurate diagnosis for a wide range of conditions. By allowing clinicians to see directly inside the body, it helps detect disease at an early stage, including cancers, inflammation and internal bleeding, when treatment is most effective. Endoscopy also supports same‑day interventions such as biopsies or polyp removal, reducing the need for more invasive surgery and avoiding emergency admissions. For patients, this means earlier answers, quicker treatment and better outcomes.

Local people will be aware that in February a major incident was declared at Southampton General Hospital following a fire in the west wing. This fire has resulted in the loss of space to deliver endoscopy services on the hospital site. Essential endoscopy services are currently being carried out across a number of alternative sites, these units will help to consolidate services at both Adanac Park and at Southampton General Hospital, allowing us to increase capacity and efficiency of the service overall.

A medium term solution for endoscopy services in Southampton must be found while the Trust works to recover from the fire damage and create a new permanent home for the department. Plot 5 has been chosen to provide part of this solution, alongside an additional space on site at UHS.

Site plan

Where will the temporary endoscopy facility be?

The proposed site for the facility is Plot 5, Adanac Health and Innovation Campus. The plot is to the immediate left of the campus entrance from Adanac Drive, adjacent to Redbridge Lane. It will be accessed from Hurst Way.

What will be on site?

We are proposing to provide three mobile units onsite at Plot 5. To support this we will be preparing the ground and creating a total 16 parking spaces for patient use, including three disabled spaces for Blue Badge holders. The facility will have its own bin store area, street lights, and new fencing inside the perimeter, to contain the site.

Site plan

What will the units be like?

The mobile endoscopy units are being rented from InHealth. They are delivered to the site fully assembled and ready to use once connected to services. Each provides a reception area, waiting area, procedure room, and recovery space.

How will the site operate?

The site will be operated by 15 UHS staff, who will be allocated parking spaces in the multi-storey park and ride building. Anticipated opening hours are 8am to 6pm, during which time an estimated 24 patients per day will attend appointments. As the loss of clinical space resulting from the fire created pressure on waiting lists, the facility will be open seven days a week to provide the maximum benefit to patients.

Appointments at the Plot 5 facility will be low risk, either diagnostic in nature or to provide surveillance for patients on a number of clinical pathways.

Your questions

How will the site be kept secure?

The site will be contained by 2.4 metre green mesh fencing, supplementary to existing fencing around the border. There will be street lighting consistent with that already provided on Adanac Health and Innovation Campus, positioned to limit light spill. The whole site will be covered by CCTV.

Will it be disruptive to the local community?

No, we expect a very minimal impact on residents. The mobile units will be positioned away from homes. They are quiet, mains powered, and a single storey in height. Staff will park in the multi-storey car park and patient journeys will be spread across the day. The units have waiting areas for patients inside.

How long will the temporary facility be there for?

At present we don’t have a definitive answer to this question. UHS will need this facility until a permanent home for endoscopy services can be provided.

The mobile units are rented, and at the end of the rental period they will be collected from site. We have no current plans to develop a built facility on Plot 5.

The Prime Foundation

In addition to developing health and care infrastructure within communities across the UK, we’re committed to enhancing the lives of the people who live and work there too.

That’s why we founded the Prime Foundation – a registered charity, actively supporting community projects in neighbourhoods where we’ve built new schemes.

The legacy of our projects isn’t just the bricks and mortar – it’s about championing a proactive approach to healthcare. To build a future where can improve the wellbeing of communities and reduce future burdens upon our health and care services. With each new project, we donate a proportion of our profits to the Prime Foundation – helping fund schemes such as sensory gardens, sports equipment and community resources.
